Louis Vuitton's London IN London this morning to launch Louis Vuitton’s new Young Arts Project with Boris Johnson, LV chairman and ceo Yves Carcelle left us in no doubt that his French label has British creativity in its veins:

“Louis Vuitton’s affinity with London began a long time ago,” Carcelle told us.

“In 1881 Louis Vuitton himself was fascinated by plans to build a tunnel to join France to London and he instructed his son to learn English and open a store in London. That store opened in 1885 and unfortunately work stopped on the tunnel until 1993 – but we opened another store that year too and I came to launch it with Patrick Vuitton, fifth generation Louis Vuitton, and we were very pleased to fulfil the wishes of our founder – only a century late!

Marc Jacobs Resort 2009

“Unfortunately, it’s extremely timely,” Marc Jacobs said of his Yves Saint Laurent-inflected Resort collection. Nods to the master were evident in the piped robe-style pieces—offered in a deep, exotic palette of magenta, green, and royal blue—as well as in the outsize heart necklaces. (There were heart prints and appliqués, too: For resort, Jacobs is clearly a lover, not a fighter.) The collection wasn’t an homage per se, as everything was filtered through Jacobs’ sensibility, which is ever on the pulse and not without humor. “If Yves Saint Laurent designed Escada, it might look like this,” he joked.

LONDON — Londoners can now get a peep into the kooky, colorful world of Marc by Marc Jacobs. Earlier this month, the label opened its first British store on South Audley Street, nearby to Mount Street, where a Marc Jacobs unit opened in 2007.

The 3,896-square-foot store is located in a space that was once a bank, and boasts parquet wooden floors, high corniced ceilings and bank vaults in the basement — one of which has been converted into a room to display bags and shoes. Shelves of fluorescent T-shirts and jeans line the walls; rucksacks hang from the ceiling, and chrome stands filled with chunky bubble rhinestone rings, red heart-shaped mirror compacts and plastic lipstick pens greet customers at the door.

“I love the heights of the ceilings and I love the space, but I love to fill space with stuff,” said Robert Duffy, president and co-founder of Marc Jacobs International. “And I like it to be entertaining. I love to watch people come in and go through all the nooks and crannies trying to figure out what is in here.”
