Queen Latifah, Marc Jacobs, Mary J Blige, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Dustin Hoffman, Ernest Borgnine, Paris Hilton, Hilary Rhoda, Kate Walsh — it sounds like a red-carpet roll call for a showbiz event. But it was the Fragrance Foundation’s 37th annual ritual of handing out industry awards, held Wednesday evening at the Downtown Armory in Manhattan. Hollywood clearly has discovered the FiFi’s.

“I’m opening the show, sorry!” said late arrival Latifah with an apologetic grin as she sprinted down the red carpet, flanked by beefy bodyguards.

But others took a more leisurely stroll down the red carpet — especially an affable and accommodating Hoffman, who was accompanying his wife, nominee Lisa Hoffman. When asked how the FiFi’s differ from the Oscars, Dustin Hoffman replied, “It’s a much shorter red carpet! And Paris Hilton wows both of the shows, knocks ’em dead.”

Bras, briefs and boxer shorts were donated to this year’s Chelsea Flower Show to be used in display of how to grow your own fruit and vegetables in unwanted underwear.

Bras, briefs and boxer shorts were donated to this year’s Chelsea Flower Show to be used in display of how to grow your own fruit and vegetables in unwanted underwear.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) asked visitors to Chelsea Flower Show to donate clean unwanted bras, boxer shorts and jockey pants for its summer Grow Your Own campaign.

Dozens handed in old underwear which will now be used, alongside stock contributed by Marks and Spencer, in a ‘good life’ display at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, from 7 – 12 July 2009.

“Due to their conical shape, bras are ideal containers for turning into hanging baskets, and if you sew two together, you have what is best described as a ‘hanging bra-sket’. Once filled with compost you can grow salad leaves, herbs, alpine strawberries and even tumbling cherry tomatoes in them; the bigger the bra the more you can grow. But the serious message behind the ‘bra-skets’ is that you do not need a lot of space or even a lot of money to start growing your own food – just a bit of imagination.”

The ‘good life’ display is part of a wider campaign by the RHS to encourage more people to grow their own fruit and vegetables. Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister and civic organisation including the National Trust have also called for more people to grow their own food in order to improve healthy eating and tackle climate change by reducing food miles.

Millions of women could be risking arthritis in their knees by wearing high-heeled shoes, doctors have warned.

高跟鞋会不会让女人受伤

Osteoarthritis of the knee is twice as common in women as it is in men–and the researchers suggested in an article in The Lancet medical journal that high heels might be the reason why.

Researchers asked 20 healthy women with an average age of 36 to walk along a special platform in bare feet and then in shoes with two-and-a-half inch heels. Sensors under the platform, and cameras, recorded the movements of the women’s ankle and knee joints.

The results showed that when the women were walking in high heels there was greater strain between the kneecap and thigh bone than when they walked with bare feet.

高跟鞋会不会让女人受伤

Walking in high heels increased the normal torque forces at the knee by an average of 23%, which imposed a greater stretching force through the lateral knee ligaments.

Ultimately, Dr. Kerrigan would like her research to lead to improved shoe design and answer specific questions such as “How high is too high?” or “What about wearing heels only for special occasions?” Says Dr. Kerrigan, who, incidentally, never wears heels: “As for wearing high heels, probably the more you wear heels, the more likely you’ll develop arthritis. My advice is don’t wear heels.”

Greece wants to discourage women from wearing stiletto heels at summer performances held in key archaeological sites because of damage to the monuments, a senior culture ministry official said Thursday.

“Female visitors must wear shoes that do not wound the monuments,” Eleni Korka, director of Greek prehistoric and classical antiquities, told AFP.

“These monuments have a skin that suffers and people must realise that.”

A set of guidelines coming into force from next January will also ban food and drink at on-site performances and forbid entry to anyone who is drunk.

Show operators are also held to strict decibel limits and rules covering the installation and removal of scenery, Korka added.

“There is great pressure on the ministry to grant the use of archaeological sites from April to October but this is a schedule which the sites cannot bear, there must be a limit,” she said.

Greek archaeologists are concerned that key sites such as the Roman-era Odeon of Herod Atticus in Athens and the Classical-era Epidaurus Theatre in the Peloponnese are showing the strain of continuous use, both in terms of wear caused by show equipment and the passage of thousands of spectators.

In 2006, the ministry stopped performances in August at the Odeon, saying the site had seen “excessive use” and was in need of maintenance.

A year earlier, maintenance crews found and removed an accumulated 27 kilogrammes (59 pounds) of chewing gum wads stuck under the marble seats.
